PGWP Extension

Canada PGWP Extension

A PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) lets international students work in Canada after graduation.
But PGWP is generally NOT extendable — with a few special exceptions.

When Extension IS Possible

1. Public Policy Extensions (Temporary Rules)

Sometimes Canada allows extensions (example: COVID-era policies)

👉 If eligible, you may get:

  • Additional open work permit (up to 18 months)

⚠️ These policies are time-limited and not always active

2. Passport Expiry Case

If your PGWP was issued shorter due to passport expiry:

✔ You can extend it to full validity
✔ Must renew passport first

3. Apply for Another Work Permit (Alternative)

If PGWP cannot be extended, you can switch to:

✔ Employer-Specific Work Permit

  • Need job offer + LMIA

✔ Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

  • If PR application is in process

✔ Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

  • Work permit support from province
